End of April: Roger Rural

In the 4-H calendar, April is when a contestant commits to animals for Fair. The turkeys and geese have arrived and are living in small pens and sheds in the backyard; the pigs are growing, and every trip through Parker from Denver is a trip to the feed store to buy more scratch grain or pig food or some hardware for a bunny cage. The rabbit judging season is almost over and the rabbit showing season is midway through. Even though the days, thanks to our urban colleagues, have an artificial extra hour of daylight attached, one still feels exhausted by seven o'clock at night. By May, one learns to live with the artificial time change, but one still feels a start when it's time for bed and daylight's still about.
